Healthier Comfort Foods
Q. To my family, comfort foods mean cheese--macaroni
and cheese, fettuccine Alf redo, pepperoni
pizza. What are some ways to make
these fatty comfort foods healthier without
sacrificing taste?
A.
Some great ways to cut down on the calories
in comfort foods with little sacrifice to taste
is to make similar ingredient substitutions
to those ingredients with the most calories,
sugar, and fat. The following may be some helpful
suggestions:
-
To
thicken soups or stews, add a little flour
to some of the broth.
-
Use
low fat sour cream or plain yogurt in the
place of plain sour cream.
-
Use
the lower fat versions of cheeses, cream
cheeses and cream soups. Sometimes cut the
toppings in half.
-
Use
broth to cook pastas, macaroni, and spaghetti
-- so delicious they won't need as much
sauce!
-
Many
times recipes have too much of an ingredient
like butter or margarine just to sauté onions
and vegetables. Cut margarine, butter,
and oil when possible.
-
Use
preserves to sweeten fruit for pies or desserts
instead of butter and sugar or fruit canned
in syrup.
-
Use
natural sweeteners like Sucanat when possible.
-
Substitute
vanilla yogurt for the egg and oil in brownie
or cake mixes.
-
Use
low fat or 1% milk in the place of milk
or canned milk.
Try
these comfort food recipes to hit the spot on
these cold wintry evenings:
White
Chili
Cinnamon
Apple Pear Dessert
Guilt-Free
Fettuccine Alfredo
Lowfat
Macky Cheese
Twice-Baked
Cheesy Potatoes
