Knowing your total blood cholesterol level is an important first step in determining your risk for heart disease. The second step is even more critical which is knowing your HDL ("good") cholesterol level. Determining the cholesterol ratio -- which is total cholesterol divided by the HDL cholesterol -- is an indicator in determining heart disease risk.

Total blood cholesterol is the most common measurement of blood cholesterol. The following guidelines are provided to for you to determine your Cholesterol and heart disease risk.

Cholesterol ratio

  • Great is a Cholesterol Ratio 3.5:1  or less
  • High is a Cholesterol Ratio  5:1 or higher

Total cholesterol

  • Good is less than 200 mg/dL
  • Borderline high is 200 to 239 mg/dL
  • High is 240 mg/dL or higher

HDL cholesterol

  • Good is 60 mg/dL or a little higher
  • Borderline is 40-50 mg/dL
  • Not so good is less than 40 mg/dL
 LDL cholesterol
  • High is 130 mg/dL or higher
  • Good for healthy people is lower than 130 mg/dL 
  • Great is 100 mg/dL or less
